Staff Stability Improves Local Authority Ofsted Rating

West Berkshire Children’s Service Ofsted rating has significantly improved after a 50% vacancy for social workers was overturned. The local authority were Ofsted rated as “inadequate” two years ago following Ofsted Inspectors findings that “widespread” failures were partly due to the unfilled vacancies in crucial areas of the social work teams.

A recent report from the Ofsted Inspection revealed that the vacancy list for social workers had narrowed to 10%. The turnaround has led Ofsted to state that children under the care of Berkshire Local Authority were now enjoying “stable, warm and helpful relationships with their social workers and foster carers”. The local authority is now rated as “good”.

Staff Stability is crucial in developing working relationships with families, children and other professionals. Ofsted cited the stability of its social workers and having near “full teams” as being key to the improvements.  The report said that “Social workers understand the importance of relationships and direct work with children and the need for up-to-date good-quality assessments, plans, reviews and chronologies.”

Staff stability and having full social work teams is so important for consistency and unfortunately, looked after children have a number of social workers within their time in care.
