Refugee Week

Refugee Week

This Refugee Week, Sunbeam Fostering stands proudly with refugees, asylum seekers, and all who believe in creating a more compassionate world. Every year, Refugee Week is a chance to reflect, connect, and act and in 2025, its theme couldn’t be more powerful: “Community as a Superpower”

At Sunbeam, we see this superpower in action every day through the incredible individuals and families who open their homes to children who’ve lost not only their countries, but often their childhoods too.

My foster carers helped me feel like I belonged. They made me part of their family. I now want to become a social worker and help others.

What Is Refugee Week?

Refugee Week is the UK’s largest festival celebrating the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. It’s a moment to deepen understanding and challenge myths. The 2025 theme, “Community as a Superpower,” highlights how collective strength, kindness, and shared humanity can transform lives.

Every day is different… each challenge you go through with the child bonds you and makes you both stronger for each other.

Why This Matters

When a refugee or unaccompanied asylum-seeking child arrives in the UK, they’re not just looking for shelter they’re hoping for a place to feel safe, wanted, and understood.

A stable foster home can be the turning point—from living in precarious situations to building trust, community, and emotional healing .

Sunbeam’s specialist approach ensures children are matched based on language, culture, and religion, helping them to integrate while preserving identity.

How do I get started with fostering?

It usually takes about four to six months from the initial inquiry to become a foster carer. A series of visits and assessments with a social worker precede the final interview with a panel that will decide whether you will be approved to foster.
