Children of Foster Carers Month

Children of Foster Carers Month

October is a time to shine a light on a very special group of children who often go unnoticed – the children of foster carers. While foster carers open their homes to children in need, the biological or adopted children of these carers play an equally important role. They are the unsung heroes who contribute to the loving, stable environment foster children need, sharing their homes, families, and sometimes even their parents’ attention.

Children of Foster Carers Month is an annual campaign led by The Fostering Network, which celebrates the vital role that children of foster carers play in a fostering household and runs from Tuesday, 1st October 2024 to Thursday 31st October 2024. It is a time to acknowledge their efforts, challenges, and unique experiences, as well as celebrate their kindness and resilience.

The Role They Play

Children of foster carers are often the first friends that foster children make when entering a new home. This can be life-changing for a foster child who may feel scared, alone, or unsure of what to expect. By simply being themselves—playing games, sharing stories, or offering companionship—they help foster children feel welcome.

These children model acceptance and empathy, learning early on how to share their lives with others who may come from very different backgrounds. They grow up understanding that love and family aren’t defined by blood, but by how we care for one another.

Lessons in Empathy, Strength, and Resilience

Despite the challenges, many children of foster carers come away from their experiences with profound lessons. They grow up with an understanding of the world that is deeper than many of their peers. They learn to appreciate the importance of compassion and become more empathetic to others’ struggles. These children know what it means to lend a helping hand, to open their hearts to those in need, and to be patient in the face of difficult circumstances.

For many, fostering shapes their identity, guiding them toward careers in social work, teaching, or healthcare, where they continue to help others. Others simply carry the empathy they’ve learned into their everyday lives.

As we celebrate “Children of Foster Carers Month” and honour the incredible contributions made by these young people, it’s a perfect time to think about how you can make a difference. Foster families, help provide safe, nurturing homes for children in need.
