Life Story Work
‘I’m working on my life story. I’m not decided if it’s going to be a musical or a movie with music in it’ These are words of inspiration from singer Dolly Parton.
We can tell the story of our lives using just one memory: right? No this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The story of our lives begins from before we are even born. Therefore, it is extremely important for the memories to be treasured and preserved. Children and young persons in care are more vulnerable and being able to reflect on their growth and progress whilst in care is a treasure.
It is for this reason that we encourage life story work or creating a life story book. The happy moments, the sad moments, the challenging moments and how we overcome are all valuable in telling our stories. The toy we cherish so much, the experience we had in education, in our placements, in our foster families are all memories which we’ll reflect on. Let’s help to preserve these memories by capturing and saving them in life story work. Let us help our children and young persons to remember their accomplishments. While they may not be where they want to be; they are definitely not where they started.
