My Fostering Journey with Sunbeam By FC Teka Berhe

I have had the pleasure of being part of the Sunbeam Fostering family since November 2021, and over the past three and a half years, I’ve cared for three incredible young people. Having been a foster carer for over 20 years, I can genuinely say that my time with Sunbeam has been a refreshing and deeply rewarding chapter in my journey.
What truly sets Sunbeam apart is the strong sense of community it fosters. From day one, I’ve felt welcomed and supported not just by the Sunbeam team, but also by fellow foster carers, social workers, and the young people we care for. These relationships have become the foundation of my experience, and they reflect the very heart of fostering: connection, trust, and shared growth.
One of the highlights of my time here has been participating in training sessions and support groups, particularly our ARC sessions, which I find incredibly enriching. These gatherings not only help me grow as a carer, but also provide a space to learn, reflect, and connect with others who understand the joys and challenges of fostering.

Sunbeam’s events like the much-anticipated End of Year parties bring us all together in a meaningful way. These moments of celebration are a wonderful reminder of the positive impact we’re making in young people’s lives, and they highlight the dedication of the entire Sunbeam network.
I am especially grateful for the exceptional support I’ve received, particularly from my supervising social worker, Roshni Mathew. Her guidance and encouragement have made a lasting difference in my journey.
Being a foster carer with Sunbeam has been a truly fulfilling experience. I’m proud to be part of a team that values relationships, growth, and community and I look forward to continuing this journey, helping to make a difference one connection at a time.
