Social Work Week 2026
At Sunbeam Fostering, World Social Work Week is a time to look beyond the case files and meeting rooms to the quiet, profound heart of our mission. It is a week to celebrate the individuals who do not just manage lives, but carefully, tenderly, help to rebuild them.
For over two decades, Sunbeam has been more than just an agency; we have been a sanctuary where professional expertise meets a deep-rooted passion for child welfare. Our journey is defined by the families we unite and the futures we protect, driven by a team that treats every child as an individual and every foster carer as a hero.
The journey of a social worker is rarely a simple path. It is a landscape of complex emotions, where every day requires a delicate balance of professional expertise and raw human kindness. At Sunbeam, we pride ourselves on fostering a culture of support, ensuring our social workers have the resources and the heart to help children find their footing when the ground feels uncertain.
For those outside the profession, social work can sometimes be seen through a lens of administrative tasks. But at Sunbeam, we know the “real work” is found in the invisible threads of connection. As Roshni Mathew (SSW) explains:
āWhile staying on track is important, the real heart of my job is empathy. This isnāt just about ticking off tasks or managing cases; itās about connecting with people, understanding their struggles, and offering the support they need in ways that go beyond the paperwork.ā
It is this empathy that acts as a bridge, allowing a social worker to see not just a “case,” but a child with a story that is still being written.
The most beautiful part of this journey is witnessing the moment a childās world begins to change. These milestones are not always loud or dramatic; often, they are as quiet as a flicker of trust. Mehwish Jahan (social worker) captured the beginning of such a journey:
āOne of my favourite moments in my journey as a Supervising Social Worker was witnessing a remarkable transformation in a foster child, A. When A first arrived at the foster carersā (FC) home, he was resistant and reluctant to stay. He struggled with trusting the FC and often disregarded the house rules, making it clear that he didnāt want to be there.ā
At Sunbeam, we believe in the power of persistence. We know that with the right environment, the “reluctant to stay” can become “eager to thrive.”
āThe breakthrough moment came when A started to trust the FC and began following the house rules. More than just adherence to rules, it signified a deeper level of respect and connection. The true highlight was when A expressed his desire to stay with the FC long-term a testament to the transformative power of love, patience, and a supportive environment.ā – Mehwish Jahan (social worker)
