LGBT+ History Month 2025
LGBT History Month is a time to celebrate and reflect on the rich history, struggles, and achievements of LGBTQ+ community. Each year, it offers a chance to recognise the individuals, movements, and milestones that have shaped LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, both in the UK and globally. By looking back at the challenges faced and the progress made, LGBT History Month serves not only as a moment of pride but also as an opportunity to educate and inspire change for a more inclusive future. With a different theme each year, the month encourages learning, reflection, and action, providing a platform to amplify the voices and stories that have often been overlooked. This celebration reminds us of the importance of equality, acceptance, and understanding in building a world where everyone can be proud of who they are.
Sunbeam Fostering firmly believes in the power of diversity and inclusivity. We celebrate the rich tapestry of identities and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community and recognize the incredible potential that LGBTQ+ foster carers possess in shaping the lives of vulnerable children. We firmly believe that love knows no boundaries, and it is the foundation upon which we build our fostering community.
Origins of LGBT History Month
LGBT History Month in the UK began in 2005, following the success of similar events in the United States, where National LGBT History Month had been observed since 1994. The UK initiative was launched by the LGBT History Month Steering Group, which included key organisations like Schools Out UK and the Department of Education. It was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in the UK, which occurred on 27th November 1967. The idea was to ensure that the LGBTQ+ community’s history and contributions were recognised and taught in schools, workplaces, and communities.
LGBT History Month not only provides an opportunity to highlight the struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals but also to celebrate milestones, such as the achievements in equal rights and social acceptance.
Theme for LGBT History Month 2025
The theme for LGBT History Month 2025 in the UK will be “Activism and Social Change.” This theme will focus on the history of LGBTQ+ activism and the transformative social changes driven by advocacy, protest, and the tireless efforts of individuals and communities. This theme is a powerful reminder of the ongoing work for equality, and it celebrates the activists and movements that have made positive changes in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. As we look to the future, it serves as an invitation for us all to reflect on how we can contribute to furthering social change and activism for the LGBTQ+ community.
